We’re working on travel’s greatest challenges with the world’s leading destinations.
The Destination Think team is proud to share the next phase of our journey alongside hundreds of tourism industry leaders committed to a vision of sustainable, equitable, and flourishing travel.
At today’s webinar, “Shaping the Future of Sustainable Travel”, we introduced a new initiative demonstrating Destination Think’s commitment to collaboration and knowledge sharing. Alongside panellists from Banff, Copenhagen, and Queenstown, we announced that we are regularly gathering with a committed cohort of destination leaders who are supporting our next phase and are eager to share what they have learned amongst themselves and with the world. The group is providing the peer support needed to solve problems that are bigger than any one place.
The 10 founding members were invited to join based on their ambition, vision, and track record of success: Banff Lake Louise Tourism, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association, Destination Queenstown, Mammoth Lakes Tourism, Noosa Shire, Tourism Tofino, Travel Marquette, Visit Bend, Visit Grand Junction, and Wonderful Copenhagen.
This new collaboration brings fresh momentum to sustainable innovations in travel and tourism and marks the next phase in Destination Think’s evolution. Our team has been leading sustainability conversations with destination leaders for many years, and this is a natural next step at a time when the opportunity and need for collective sustainability projects is immense. The greatest challenges for today’s travel industry, including decarbonization, optimal visitation, and environmental care, are best addressed in tandem. Today’s sustainability-minded leaders face many barriers to implementing solutions and managing change, but the peer group is working through issues together. Mutual support is critical to accelerating change.
“…what if we, collectively and globally, could speed up the dissemination and implementation of all the millions of sustainable solutions and actions out there, somewhere through the movement and meeting of people like us? What impact could we make today?” – Mikkel Aarø-Hansen, CEO at Wonderful Copenhagen
The collaborators in our peer support program are putting their heads together on challenges that include:
- Attracting visitors who support local values,
- Preserving the things that draw visitors for future generations,
- Helping the community be heard and find the benefits and positivity from tourism,
- Navigating emerging situations that may be disruptors or risks to tourism,
- Providing ideas to the tourism industry to reduce operating costs,
- Addressing housing and social equity concerns,
- Reducing the environmental impact of travel-related activities.
